The Healing Power of Knowing When Not to Speak

The Healing Power of Knowing When Not to Speak

This month, I’m sharing an affirmation:

I trust my intuition to guide both my words and my silence.

I return to this affirmation often. It’s a reminder to pause and listen to myself before speaking.

While reflecting on Chapter 2 of Spiritual Hygiene, one lesson really stood out to me: pause before you speak so you can respond from presence rather than pain.

This lesson feels especially vital for anyone walking the path of healing, particularly if spiritual hygiene or responsibility is new territory.

For me, spiritual hygiene is about tending to your inner world, your energy, your habits, your reactions, and the way you meet others. It is the loving act of taking responsibility for what you feel and how you share it.

  • I have noticed how often people pour out their stories, especially to strangers.
Maybe you are in a waiting room, making small talk, when suddenly someone shares their heartache or life journey. I have found myself doing this too.

Yet healing is showing me a new way forward.

I am learning that not every moment needs my story. Sometimes, true generosity is presence and attentive listening, rather than turning the focus to my own experience.

That awareness feels like spiritual responsibility.
This process is about choosing responsibility for my words and responses. By noticing old habits and choosing growth, I honor both myself and others in conversation.

Today, this reflection landed with unusual clarity. As I prepared for a sound bath, a time when I am often anxious, I noticed I felt relaxed, grounded, and calm.
It was as if I had gathered my energy back by spending the day writing, playing games, watching my favorite gamer, savoring delicious takeout, listening to a live Reiki session, and closing the evening with a soothing magnesium bath.
It was a gentle day, filled with ease.

In that gentle ease, I remembered times I sat in waiting rooms, listening to strangers share pieces of their lives and how I once did the same.

*****
Now, I am committed to showing up with conscious presence and intention, aiming to root my words in the present moment with others.

Perhaps this is an invitation for you as well.

Pause and ask yourself:
  • Where in my life do I speak too quickly?
  • Am I sharing from presence, or from pain?
  • When I overshare, what am I really hoping to receive?
  • What would it look like to trust silence a little more?

See these questions as gentle guides to honesty and compassion in communication and healing, not as reasons for self-judgment.

Right now, I am learning to embrace being a work in progress. I am not reaching for perfection, only for growth.

Here’s another truth I will share: I am not my pain.
I might feel pain or remember pain from the past, but I am not my pain. I can choose wisdom, choose my attitude, and decide whether to speak from my old wounds or from the deeper peace I’m building now.

I hope you choose to speak and listen from a place of presence and healing, too.
